Try a Costume Wig

The idea of dressing in a costume is to transform into another character. To do this effectively you shouldn’t cut corners. One of the best ways to fully get into character is by wearing the perfect costume wig.

Costume Wigs Have a Long History

Indeed, people not only used to wear costume wigs for special occasions, but wigs in general were a daily part of life – especially for European aristocracy. Costume wigs were meant to cover up thinning hair most notably.

Nowadays, costume wigs are just for fun, and there are many choices when it comes to that as well. In general, there are specific wigs for specific outfits. For example, if a man wanted to go as George Washington, he would choose the standard ponytail wig from the 1700s.

The 80’s are noted for some hairstyles that have inspired many costume wigs. Of course, many men love to dress up as rock stars, and as such the wigs they choose include ones with a punk rock look. Also, the comical mullet works for both men and women who want an 80’s look.

When it comes to women, there are many different wigs that they can choose from, depending on the time period of their costume. For example, if a woman wants to be Lady Godiva or Rapunzel, she will need a very long wig.

If a woman wants to be something from the Renaissance, she has the option of wearing along wig, or a wig that has a decorative bun. Additionally, the decorative bun look is ideal if a woman is getting a costume from the Victorian era.

As time went on, hairstyles changed, and so it comes as no surprise that wig styles changed as well. The woman who chooses to go as a flapper from the 1920s, for example, will need to get a short, bobbed wig.

Costume shops often have wigs to rent in different styles, colors and sizes. It is important to find one that is both comfortable and that looks real. Be sure to keep your real hair from showing, by either using clips or a hair cap.
